Slutty Science: Sex & Gender

Updated: Dec 30, 2020

Last week on The Slut Show we talked about condoms, STD’s, threesomes, anal-sex, homosexuality and way Mo(o)re - pun intended. This week we are back in our fight for more diversity and inclusivity in the media landscape and therefore I am beyond excited to have had the opportunity to have Deen on the show. Deen identifies as trans-masculine/ non-binary. We talked about love, sex, what it means to experience gender dysphoria and the role society plays in feeling accepted as transgender.

In order to understand what transgender means, we firstly need to understand the meaning of the word gender and in order to understand the meaning of the word gender, we firstly need to split up sex and gender.

Sex is the assignment or classification of someone as male, female or intersex based on physical anatomy at birth.

Gender is socially constructed and incorporates a set of behavioral, cultural, and psychological traits, which varies from culture to culture. It influences how people perceive themselves and each other, how they act and interact, and the distribution of power and resources in society. Gender identity can change over time.

Cisgender refers to those who identify with the gender they were assigned to at birth.

Gender diverse is everyone who does not identify with the gender they were assigned with at birth.

Transgender is a broad term that describes those who identify differently than the sex they were assigned at birth.

Non-binary individuals identify as a gender that is not exclusively male or female.

Gender identity and sexual orientation have absolutely nothing to do with one another.

Gender identity refers to a person’s internal sense of self.

Whereas a person’s sexual orientation refers to who a person is attracted to.

Transitioning is the gender journey people take in order to live into their authentic gender. This may include dressing in a way that is more representative of one’s gender, but it also includes medical interventions such as hormone replacement therapy and or surgical procedures.
